Henri Cartier-Bresson Photo Critique
The reason for my choosing this image is primarily because of the railroad tracks. I like train and railroads, and though it took a second for my eye to find the tracks once I did I knew I wanted to critique this photo. Another reason I chose it is because it actually took me a second to find the tracks and figure out what was happening in the photo. The more I looked, the more I liked it. I love how the concrete walls create sharp angles that move my eye throughout the photo and eventually to the tracks. There is a lot of good content in this photo.
The first thing I notice are the concrete walls that create a vertical V slightly offset to the right in the frame. This is the foremost object in the composition and directs the eye to the rest. It first led my eye to the two gentlemen in the upper right corner. One is standing straight up, maybe uninterested, while the other is peering over the side of the wall looking at the tracks almost like a child. We don't know what he's looking at specifically. It could be just the tracks, or maybe a train is coming in out of frame. We'll never know. Off to the left looks like some sort of farm due to what appears to be massive rolls of straw and greenhouse type structures, though I don't think that's what they are specifically. What is truly fascinating about this photo is the clear divide. On one side we have well dressed men who most likely enjoy the finer things in life (nothing wrong with that), while on the other side we have a farm or something of the sort, which we know is run by men who do not dress like those on the right side of the photo. As for some technical aspects, it is a wide shot with everything in decent focus throughout the DOF. I also like how the men on the right are mere silhouettes.
Final Project Proposal
Proposal 1: Lake Life
This photo essay would capture the experience of what it's like to live on a lake. When you live on a lake and own a boat, there is a certain sense of community, relaxation, and freedom. There are also some stressful elements such as boat maintenance, docking, or loading and unloading trailers. This essay would capture all of these different elements and experiences that come with living on a lake.
Shot List: De-winterizing boat, preparing boat for summer, hauling boat to marina, unloading boat off of trailer, docking boat on boat lift, filling boat with fuel, loading boat with passengers and food/drink, preparing for day out on the lake, socializing with other boaters, running the boat at full speed, dropping anchor and swimming or laying out, eating and drinking on boat.
